AI Success Isn’t About Technology- It’s About Leadership

Using these past few months, I’ve done a lot of writing. ALOT! So much so that I am writing more based on my lived experiences and even encounters with connections on LinkedIn. The writing is not done in an inflammatory way to get readers to read or click, but rather because of the importance of thinking beyond these interactions, experiences, and iterations. For instance, while surfing LinkedIn, having a beer, and listening to the Cowboys and Bears game, I happened upon Allyson Carter’s post. My GOD! I thought. This message is action-packed and worthy of note. See for yourself the following post. Allyson, thanks for inspiring thoughts and giving me a call to action to “think deeper.”

Every organization today is experimenting with generative AI. From productivity pilots to enterprise-wide initiatives, the promise of AI is everywhere. Yet the reality is sobering: up to 95% of AI pilots fail to deliver measurable business impact (Boston Consulting Group, 2023).

So what separates the 5% that succeed from the rest? It’s not data pipelines, as Allyson’s LinkedIn post points out, or even model accuracy.

The real gap is leadership. Yes— that 10-letter word that starts with “L” and ends with “P”. Never thought about Leadership and Loss Prevention, “LP” did you? Think about it from that perspective.

Why Leadership Determines AI Success

Organizations that realize AI’s true value understand that AI adoption is a leadership challenge first and a technical challenge second. The following table details Leadership and What It Looks Like in Action (Elementary design by me to draw a point home)

Without leadership clarity, even the most advanced AI tools will sit unused or worse, create confusion and distrust.

This Is Not a Tech Conversation

In my conversations and experiences with management and executive management, too many executives believe their barriers are technical: better infrastructure, more data, more models. But technology is not the bottleneck.

The bottleneck is leadership maturity, the ability to align people, process, and strategy so AI becomes an enabler of transformation rather than another “innovation experiment.”

Thus, the failure of an AI pilot initiative isn’t simply a technology conversation. It’s a leadership conversation.

The Crucial Role of L&D and Talent Leaders

This is the crossroads where your Talent Development and Learning leaders can step up. In partnering with the C-Suite and technologists, they are uniquely positioned to design adoption plans that prepare both the business and its people for AI at scale.

That means:

  • Building AI literacy at every level.
  • Embedding change management into adoption strategies.
  • Equipping leaders to be role models for AI use responsibly.

When Talent and L&D leaders embrace their role at this crossroads, the conversation shifts from “What can AI do?” to “How will we lead with AI?”

  • Strategy alignment questions.
  • Trust and communication readiness.
  • Leadership modeling behaviors.
  • Scaling and governance guardrails.

This is the first step in moving from AI pilots to AI impact.
